The next entry in the Doom series will suck up “three times the horsepower” of id Software’s other upcoming titles, it said Thursday. Id’s technology whiz John Carmack and Todd Hollenshead announced the new title in the seminal first-person shooter series at the company’s QuakeCon event Thursday. Carmack was comparing the new Doom to id’s other upcoming title Rage.
Both will be built using the company’s ‘Tech 5′ engine, but “the next Doom game will look like it’s built on another engine” because it’s so powerful, said Carmack. To keep up with the processor demands, Doom will run at a frame rate of 30 frames per second, compared to Rage’s 60. Doom will be a multi-platform release, although Carmack said that “the PC version will support significant visual improvements over 360 or PS3 versions.” More details available at Quake Con Keynote at 1up.
