Max Payne Movie Tries to Beat Videogame Curse

Maxpayne660demon

Will Max Payne turn out to be the videogame hero that finally breaks the bad movie curse?

Opening Friday, the Mark Wahlberg action picture is being touted as the weekend's likely box office champ, but critics are severely underwhelmed and fan reaction is mixed.

To help Max Payne (trailer embedded) break Hollywood's losing streak with videogame movies, producer Julie Yorn and 20th Century Fox execs listened to pitches from scores of screenplay writers before hiring first-time scribe Beau Thorne.

His take? Strip the videogame down to its essential elements, then craft a compelling story.

"The game is very visually cinematic, but it also takes eight to 12 hours to beat, so there was way too much material and information for a movie," Thorne said in a studio briefing. "I tried to learn everything about what was in the game and then tried to figure out ways to simplify and streamline it. The challenge was to figure out how to stay faithful to the original material, but at the same time propel it forward so it works as a taut thriller."

Payne follows a long line of Hollywood stinkers that failed to translate such interactive thrills into awesome cinema. Angelina Jolie's Lara Croft: Tomb Raider came close in 2001 to cracking the code, but since then, videogame-based movies like Resident Evil, House of the Dead and Hitman failed to win over skeptics.

Bloodrayne250

Even worse, Uwe Boll's BloodRayne (pictured, right) earned especially low marks as the worst movie Ben Kingsley has ever appeared in.

Then there was the Halo movie. The much-anticipated project died in 2006 when Hollywood studios, blanching at the $130 million price tag, pulled the plug despite hands-on oversight of producer Peter Jackson.

Spidey 4 Release Buzz

Although it's not set in stone, it appears that fans could expect to see Spider-Man 4 in theaters within the next three years. Whether or not director Sam Raimi and stars Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst remains to be seen.

According to IESB, Marvel's vice chairman Peter Cuneo advised the press during a conference call yesterday that the future of Spider-Man 4 is "up to Sony" with the most likely release date for the film being in either 2010 or 2011, although Cuneo added "we can't speak for them and I think that we don't know."

Cuneo added that Sony hopes to make Spidey 4 "within a reasonable timeframe" and that they "may be looking at some issues with the cast and so on, I think they have to make some decisions."

Duke Nukem film in the works

There's been a spate of classic computer games making the move to the big screen recently, ranging from Doom and Hitman through to Silent Hill and it appears that there are more on the way - and we aren't talking about the BIOSHOCK movie for once.
Duke Nukem Forever may not be getting any closer to release, but that doesn't mean the same is true for the film.

Duke Nukem Forever may not be getting any closer to release, but that doesn't mean the same is true for the film.

According to comments made by Scott Faye, who is currently working as a producer for the Max Payne movie adaptation, there is also a Duke Nukem movie in production over in Hollywood.

"I'm working diligently at making a Duke Nukem movie scenario that will live up to the character and its import in the videogame world," said Scott in a comment to the press. Sounds like maybe Scott doesn't understand that gamers love Duke precisely because he isn't serious or important.

Faye's company Depth Entertainment currently has a series of production deals in place with the Radar Group, which is owned by Duke Creator and ex-3D Realms-er Scott Miller. The pair are apparently working on a series of "new cross-media franchises that are being designed from the ground up as games and films."

Next Harry Potter movie pushed back to July 2009

The release date for the sixth Harry Potter movie, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," was pushed back on Thursday to July 2009 from its original slot in November 2008, movie studio Warner Bros. said.

The eight-month change in the opening date to July 17, 2009, is expected to disappoint millions of Harry Potter fans around the world who have already been waiting more than a year to watch the next big-screen installment in the international literary and film phenomenon.

Trailers for "Half-Blood Prince" began running last week in advance of the expected November movie release worldwide.

Warner Bros., a unit of Time Warner Inc, said it had decided to make the change to bolster its release schedule for the lucrative summer moviegoing season -- a period that can account for as much as 40 percent of Hollywood's annual box office receipts.

Warner Bros. President Alan Horn said the studio was also still feeling repercussions from the three-month Hollywood screenwriters strike that ended in February but has "impacted the readiness of scripts for other films."

"We know the summer season is an ideal window for a family ... release, as proven by the success of our last Harry Potter film, which is the second-highest grossing film in the franchise, behind only the first installment," Horn said.

The studio said the change of date would not alter production plans for the final, two-part Potter movie adventure, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows." The release date for part one is tentatively set for November 2010.

"Deathly Hallows," the seventh and last story from British author J.K. Rowling about the boy wizard and his friends at Hogwarts School, was published in July 2007. The series has sold an estimated 400 million copies, and the books have been translated into more than 60 languages.

The X-Files: I Want To Believe-Review

Director: Chris Carter
Screenwriters: Chris Carter, Frank Spotnitz
Starring: David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson, Billy Connolly
Running time: 104 mins
Certificate: 15

'Trust no one', urged the once-mighty show in its heyday. Well, any unsuspecting folks contemplating seeing this movie could do worse than trust those who say that The X-Files: I Want To Believe is a steaming pile of ectoplasmic gunk. That's putting it mildly.

The plot is shockingly turgid and poorly paced, revolving around the visions of a paedophile priest (Connolly) and various efforts to rescue kidnapped FBI agents from a Dr. Frankenstein-style experiment. Very little else actually happens, apart from a mind-numbing subplot featuring Scully's attempts to save a child's life via stem cell research.

Too much dramatic thrust relies on the reunion of Fox Mulder (Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Anderson), when they would operate far better within the framework of an absorbing narrative instead of effectively being the story themselves. Both actors slip back into their roles easily enough, which cannot be said for co-writer and director Chris Carter - the man who used to crank out brilliant episodes of his show for fun in the '90s.

Bizarrely, several scenes end abruptly before they reach their dramatic conclusion and the script then wildly leaps off at a tangent, forcing the viewer to do some pointless dot-joining. Or at least those who haven't nodded off during one of Mulder and Scully's laconic drawn-out musings on faith.

The decision to make this episode a standalone entity rather than a continuation of the television show's alien-government conspiracy arc is noble enough, but only serves to ensure that the fanbase has very little to cheer alongside the snoozing casual fans. Not even a familiar face popping up during the climax can rouse the interest.

The whole affair is a real shame, as there was - and still is - plenty of scope to revive the franchise and continue the adventures of Mulder and Scully. Sadly, the discovery of a severed arm in the snow is the most exciting moment during the first hour.

The story desperately needed to be on a grander scale and contain some sense of danger or jeopardy for the world, or some eerie little green men at the very least. With a bit of scissor-wielding in the editing suite, this dismal movie could have made a mundane 45 minute episode of the show. That pretty much sums it up.

We all wanted to believe that the return of The X-Files could allow us to relive the mid-90s glory days, where we shuddered at shapeshifting aliens, hissed at the Cigarette Smoking Man and taped a big 'X' onto our windows thinking it was cool. Alas, this faith was misplaced.

Space Chimps-Review

Space Chimps
Director: Kirk De Micco
Screenwriters: Kirk De Micco, Robert Moreland
Starring: Andy Samberg, Cheryl Hines, Jeff Daniels, Patrick Warburton, Kristen Chenoworth
Running Time: 81 mins
Certificate: U

Mention the phrase "Space Chimps" to someone and it'll probably conjure up the thought of a low-rent satellite reality show. As horrific as that prospect sounds, it would hold more appeal than this painful new CG kids' film from Fox. If WALL-E marked a step forward for animated cinema, then Space Chimps is an indication of the form in regression. Cheap, quick and not nearly as funny as it thinks it is, it's a dismal 81 minutes of agony.

The story centres on Ham III - a circus performer and grandson of Ham, the first chimpanzee in space - as he's recruited to join a Right Stuff team of astroprimates looking to retrieve a space probe that has slipped into a wormhole. Initially reluctant to embrace his astronaut heritage, Ham is eventually won over by his crewmates Luna (Cheryl Hines) and Titan (Patrick Warburton) after they crash-land on the planet Malgor and unite to free its inhabitants from evil dictator Zartog (Jeff Daniels).

The success of an animated film usually rests on the likeability of its lead character. Space Chimps's implosion is in part down to Andy Samberg's insufferable portrayal of Ham. Whereas Kung Fu Panda survived on the whirlwind brio of Jack Black's Po and WALL-E's warmth and inquisitiveness garnished Pixar's latest, Ham is completely devoid of appeal. The filmmakers' efforts to establish him as a roguishly lovable Han Solo-type fail and he ends up leaning closer to Jar-Jar Binks levels of intolerability.

Ham is described by his crewmates as a liability to the mission; he's also a liability to the film - an arrogant and selfish primate who's impossible to root for. This type of loud-mouthed obnoxious character usually elicits roars of joy when they're bumped off in teen slasher movies. As problematic as the Shrek sequels were, at least the green ogre had a kind mind and soul.

Space Chimps makes half-hearted attempts to reach out and strike a chord with older audiences. Film buffs may recognise mirrors of 2001's pulsating sound and light Star Gate sequence and numerous Right Stuff nods, yet these are tokenistic gestures - not subtle or weaved delicately into the film's fabric, but bludgeoned in for the sake of having them there. A bizarre sequence involving a Freudian "Dark Cloud of the Id" smacks of screenwriters insisting they're too intelligent to be writing movies this bad.

It's assumed that eye-popping visuals are a given in a film like this - Space Chimps proves otherwise. Though the three main astroprimates are expressive enough, there's a lack of technical sophistication in the animation of the supporting characters and background renderings. The sparsity in detail gives the impression that the movie was either rushed to make a fast-approaching release date or, worse, slapped together by filmmakers who didn't really care.

There are no laugh-out-loud moments in Space Chimps - a disastrous sign for any comedy - though it stumbles towards a few quiet chuckles with a playful jab at David Bowie, a pint-sized alien Kilowatt stopping just short of explaining how she escaped from the belly of a beast and a veteran simian astronaut Houston remarking "I picked the wrong day to give up bananas" before stubbing out the fruit in frustration. Yet the incessant use of cringe-worthy puns ("chimp my ride", "let's chimprovise", "you're a chimp off the old block") quickly deflate any chance of roaring laughter.

Ham, the first hominid in space who inspired this movie, will be spinning in his grave at the thought of his legacy being tied with such an abysmal movie. If you sat an infinite number of monkeys in front of computers then, in theory, they would eventually come up with a CG-animated film. The result would be significantly better than Space Chimps.

Ledger's Joker inspired by Sid Vicious

Heath Ledger was inspired by Sex Pistols star Sid Vicious during filming for The Dark Knight.

According to the late actor's co-star Christian Bale, Ledger researched the part by viewing old clips of the band's bassist, who died in 1979.

"Heath's created an anarchic Joker unlike any ever seen before," Bale explained. "He modelled the part on Sid Vicious which made this punk-like character. His Joker is unlike any other Joker seen before. I think it is a classic portrayal of a great villain."

Bale added that he is not surprised by the calls for Ledger to win a posthumous Oscar for his role in the Batman sequel.

He said: "Heath immersed himself in the role. I would love to see him get an award."

Ledger died in January following an accidental overdose of prescription drugs.

'Batman Begins'

The Dark Knight co-writer David Goyer has revealed that Catwoman and the Penguin are unlikely to feature in future Batman sequels.

Goyer explained that, despite re-introducing the Joker in the upcoming sequel, the filmmakers want to explore new villains in future films.

He said: "Batman has been published for 70 years. In the first movie, we used Ra's Al Ghul and the Scarecrow, who had not been in the movies before, and had not been in the '60s TV show before.

"There are dozens if not hundreds of other characters that fit that bill. Everyone says it's got to be the Penguin or Catwoman [in the next film]... well I completely disagree."

Along with their appearances in the Adam West TV show, the characters also featured as antagonists in 1992's Batman Returns.

The Dark Knight is released in cinemas on July 25.

Mission Istanbul-STORY-Read At Your Own Pace

Movie Details
Genre: Adventure
Language: Hindi
Release Status and date: Released on Jul 25, 2008
Cast
Zayed Khan - Vikas Sagar
Vivek Oberoi - Rizwan Khan
Shabbir Ahluwalia - Khalil nazir
Shreya Saran - Anjali
Sunil Shetty - Owais Hussain
THE STORY:
Vikas Sagar (Zayed Khan) would go anywhere for a scoop, risk his life and limb to get an exclusive story that nobody else can. It's for this precise reason Vikas is a familiar face watched by six million viewer's weeknights on TV 24. Ambitious, popular and professional, Vikas is considered one of the most promising journalists in the business.
It's also the reason Owais Hussain (Suniel Shetty), a senior producer at the controversial Istanbulbased AL JOHARA, widely criticized as the mouthpiece of terrorists or as their network of choice, makes him an offer to head the channel's proposed Indian bureau for an outrageous salary and other perks. It's an offer he almost can't refuse because of the channel's controversial profile which ensures that it's seen by everyone globally, including the White House. It certainly would take Vikas's career to another level not only does he become the highest paid journalist in India but also puts him on an international platform. But there is one condition that the head hunters from AL JOHARA insist he must join ASAP and then fly to Istanbul for a three month orientation programme.
Their offer couldn't have come at a better time for Vikas, who's undergoing a painful divorce with wife Anjali (Shreya Saran), an equally feisty journalist whose desire to have a baby leads to their separation because her husband wants her to wait a little longer and seems to be in no mood to start a family. While Al Johara dangles the temptation of kickstarting their India operations, Vikas accepts the offer largely to mend his broken heart.
But little does Vikas know that his life is about to change when he takes the flight to Istanbul on a threemonth orientation program at the channel's headquarters. While Al Johara is one of the most viewed channels in the world, it's reputation has been largely built as the mouthpiece of a dreaded terrorist. Abu Nazir, who is on the most wanted lists of both the Interpol and FBI, is vociferous in his threat to wage war against several countries, including India. A threat he usually delivers via a videotape to Al Johara.
On the flight Vikas finds himself seated next to a stunningly beautiful copassenger who hates flying. Lisa Lobo (Shweta Bhardwaj) is headed for Istanbul to attend a medical convention or so she claims. In her obvious discomfort, she turns to an amused Vikas for moral support and distraction from the reality of being airborne. It's a budding friendship that's grounded the moment the flight lands and Lisa disappears at the airport.
Once in Istanbul, Vikas's initial impression of AL JOHARA is in sharp contrast to its notorious reputation. Especially when he meets the charismatic Ghazni (Niketan Dheer), who has business interests all over the world but whose obsession these days is AL JOHARA as an instrument to shape world events. There is only one word of caution to Vikas and that's never ever to venture onto the 13th floor known as the Catacomb.
As part of his orientation, Vikas gets handson experience in the AL JOHARA newsroom where he watches ghastly and exclusive news reports of terrorism. He learns more about Abu Nazir, who is described as "a oneman organization whose existence revolves around a single person." Vikas is told that it is extremely difficult to find out any details about his private life and his habits because such information would help the secret services who are looking for him. "Abu Nazir is cautious to the point of paranoia."
Reeling under the impact of the reality bytes at work, Vikas's only relief is his flirtatious encounters with Lisa and the lively company of soldier-turned journalist Owais Hussain who is looking forward to quitting his job and settling down with his Irish girlfriend.
But on an assignment to cover kidnapped journalists in one of Abu Nazir's terrorist camps in Afghanistan, Vikas is shocked when Abu Nazir's brother, Khalil (Shabbir Ahluwalia), brutally executes Owais Hussain just before a UN peacekeeping force mounts a rescue operation.
Reeling at this close encounter with terrorism and watching a brutal killing, Vikas returns to Istanbul in a daze and is approached by a former Turkish commando, Rizwan Khan (Vivek Oberoi), who hints that no senior employee has ever quit AL JOHARA and rattles off a list of AL JOHARA employees who had been killed in terrorist attacks within days of there being of rumours of their plans to quit or their resumes circulating in the job market! Vikas is quickly reminded of Owais Husain expressing the same to him. The stranger poses a few more questions about AL JOHARA like why Abu Nazir speaks only to AL JOHARA and leaves quietly.
Vikas discreetly runs a check on the names rattled off by Rizwan and discovers he was indeed telling the truth. Five AL JOHARA staffers before Owais Husain had either died in a car bomb explosion, abducted and killed or simply found dead. It sends a chill through Vikas's spine. He slowly notices that not everything is as simple as they look in the offices of AL JOHARA, especially when he seems to bump into strangers whose faces he soon recognizes as suicide bombers in a couple of terrorist attacks. The deeper Vikas digs into AL JOHARA's history and operations, the more questions crop up in his mind. And then he makes the cardinal mistake of straying onto the 13th floor.
Soon Vikas realizes that all is not what it seems and that he can't trust anyone not even Lisa! As he is tortured for straying onto the 13th floor, double crossed by Lisa and watches wife Anjali narrowly surviving a suicide bomb attack in Srinagar, Vikas has no choice but to ally with Rizwan after he makes a shocking revelation that Abu Nazir is dead but being kept alive by AL JOHARA through videotapes by using digital images of the terrorist and doctoring old footage.
Thereafter Vikas Sagar finds himself creating news rather than reporting it as he steals the secrets locked away on Al Johara's 13th floor, incurs Ghazni's wrath and becomes a man on the run wanted by Turkish cops, terrorists, the CIA and Lisa Lobo!
From wielding a mike before a television camera, he is forced to wield a gun and join Rizwan in a bloody mission against international terrorism.

Kismat Konnection-Review-

In college Raj Malhotra (Shahid Kapur) was numero uno. In academics, sports, dramatics and touted as the next cover of Time magazine. But four years after winning the best-student-of-the-year trophy from his architectural college, he's wondering why a brilliant architect like him, with designs to set the Canadian landscape on fire, is still struggling to find that One Big Chance to showcase his mettle.

It's almost as though some negative kismat is following him around because whenever something good is about to happen, it seems doomed to fail.

Why else would his alarm refuse to ring, his shower stop midway, his car refuse to start, just when he's in a tearing hurry to reach a crucial meeting on time?

The end result is the same? The deal is dead or the client is dead!

Desperate to fight this cussed kismat that's hell bent on playing such mean tricks on him, Raj meets a quirky oracle, Hasina Bano Jaan (Juhi Chawla). She tells him that soon his stars will change his stars and make everything work in his favour; but for all this to happen, Raj has first to find his lucky charm and never let go of it. But she tells him no more, leaving Raj mystified, trying to figure out what this charm could be.

Suddenly his life seems to be on the right track. He's managed to impress top builder Sanjeev Gill (Om Puri), into giving him a prestigious project?

Priya is a tough-talking, tough-decision taking girl with a heart of gold. She is an idealist who is intent on making the world a better, more humane place and is quite willing to fight a lone battle for it. She is a doer who believes in action. Life for her is clearly colored in blacks and whites. Shades of grey have no role for her. She will give her all to her causes, her people and her love and expect nothing less in return.

Raj even succeeds in persuading pretty Priya (Vidya Balan) that he's the Messiah who can save her beloved Community Center from destruction? And also opened her eyes to her philandering fiancé (Amit Verma).

Raj even manages to thwart the evil designs of old-college-foe-turned-deadly-professional- enemy Dave Kataria (Manoj Bohra)?

Does this mean that Raj has unwittingly discovered his lucky charm? Has lady luck finally decided to smile on him? Where will his new found kismet ultimately lead Raj? To the height of love or pinnacle of success? Only Kismat Konnection can tell?

Max Payne-Exclusive-Atleast To Me-

Yeah guys/gals this is it....the game goes "ALIVE".
When Empire online asked Mila Kunis about the upcoming fils "MAX PAYNE" she said she was playin the role Mona Sax(what a sexy name"SAX").

AND she also said:
"For anyone who’s got concerns about Mark [Wahlberg] playing Max Payne, he’s amazing in it. Great actor, great guy," she insists. "I play [an assassin] called Mona Sax who accuses him of murdering her sister and later comes to find out it wasn’t him. They kind of get together and try to figure out who was responsible for the murder of his wife and child and her sister. The whole film is about realising that you can go on a revenge spree and get your revenge but it doesn’t solve the problem. It’s a really great, dark movie. The story actually combines [the games] Max Payne 1 and 2 together. Lots of shooting and gunplay, but what makes this script different is that it’s a really dark, sad movie about a man who loses everything and thinks that the only way he can get it back is by revenge. And comes to terms with realising that he’ll never get it back."

The Dark Knight’s New Poster

This is one of the best movie posters I think I have ever seen. It shrilly screams action, magnitude and most importantly, the type of dramatic presence The Dark Knight will have when it premieres on July 18, 2008.

Fast and the Furious 4 Pictures-exclusive-

New pics of upcoming fourth installment of the Fast and the Furious franchise have surfaced courtesy of USA Today. Check them all out below. It nice to know that Vin Deisel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewester are returning. Sung Kang is making a returning from The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift as well as rapper Lil Wayne. My question is, where are the pictures of Gal Gadot? Most heterosexual males would like to see her in “action”…in the film that is.

Dragonball-upcoming movie "POSTER"

Here is the poster for the upcoming Dragonball-Z movie entitled Dragonball. “The film follows Goku, played by Justin Chatwin, and his quest to obtain the mystical Dragonballs before the evil Lord Piccolo, played by James Marsters, does. The film began development in 2002, and is directed by James Wong and produced by Stephen Chow.” Personally, I want to see if Emmy Rossum can check ass or not. Dragonball will be released April 10, 2009.
